Education Reforms in NC
North Carolina invested over one hundred thousand dollars in public education throughout the state. To do this they increased taxes to support schools in NC. They were also pushing for every child to be able to read and write. They forced this by saying that kids who could not read and write did not own full citizenship. Schools were essentially established for two reasons: To recognize each child's individual talents, interests, and abilities, and to also to develop intelligence in children and give them an advantage for when they get older and participate in the community and to achieve a common goal. Schools were made to teach kids tasks that they might need to do in order to work in a industrial economy.
Reform Governors
Josiah Bailey was also a progressive leader in North Carolina. He was originally a editor for a newspaper which was very influenced by political issues. He supported education and temperance, but was still open to improving issues over banning things from the people. Instead of supporting wholesale prohibition, he supported a bill that required a regular referendum on prohibition. He was also part of a commission board that recommended a mandatory six month school year. He eventually became a US Senator and stayed a strong Democrat.

Although eduction was enforced in North Carolina, segregation was still causing children to not be able to receive equal privileges Mattie Albritton wrote a letter about how white schools were getting all this new supplies and upgrades to their building, but the black schools were getting no such thing and even their building was just like a small shack of some sort and there was even a fence put around it to block it from view of the public. The white schools were more supported by the community than the african american schools were in towns. This contributed to which schools obtained all the new supplies and money.
Prohibition in NCOn May 26, 1908 North Carolina became the first southern state to have statewide prohibition of alcoholic beverages. Organizations such as the Friends of Temperance, the Independent Order of Good Templars, and, the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, pushed the state legislature for more control over the sale and use of alcohol. The sale of alcohol was forbidden near churches or schools. Also townships could call special meeting on whether to allow selling and use of alcohol in there township. Eventually Amendment 18 was passed banning alcohol and showing it as immoral.

Political Cartoon

People pushing for prohibition were aided by the disfranchisement of African Americans in North Carolina after the “White Supremacy” campaigns of the Democratic Party in 1898. With African Americans halted from voting, Democrats no longer worried about splitting the white vote over a issue like prohibition. This cartoon shows ex-confederates and KKK members working together to stop african americans from having rights like voting. Because of this many african americans voted for the Democratic side which supported prohibition. This cartoon is showing a negative connotation on how african americans were being treated and how this helped people to gain votes on prohibition.
Excerpt from Document
“We heartily commend the action of the General Assembly of 1899 for appropriating one hundred thousand dollars for the benefit of the public schools of the State, and pledge ourselves to increase the school fund so as to make at least a four-months’ term in each year in every school district in the State,”
This excerpt was part of Charles Aycock's speech about education reform and what he wanted to do about it. He gives one hundred thousand to public schools so they can thrive and become better to serve our children and ultimately improve our country in the future.
